Illness - the Purpose of Being Unwell

August 28, 20254 min read

Illness is often seen as an inconvenience — the cold that takes us out of work, the flu that leaves us curled up in bed. But when we pause and listen, our bodies are usually speaking loudly through these symptoms. Colds, flu-like illnesses, and even that lingering fatigue are often signs that our system is calling for a detox — physically, emotionally, and biochemically.

When we think of “detox,” we often picture green juices or diets, but our bodies already have built-in detox pathways — through the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, skin, and breath. Illness frequently arises when these systems are under strain or when old, unresolved stress patterns persist. The body uses illness as a reset button, pushing us to release what is no longer serving us.

Mouth breathing, tongue position, and the openness of the nasal pathways can also play a huge role in this process, directly influencing detox pathways and the body’s ability to clear lymph. A white coating on your tongue is often a sign that your body is attempting to detox through your lungs, and that your liver is working overtime to keep up. Everything below will help if this is the case — but for deeper, long-term support, you may also need personalised guidance in a clinic.

The Emotional Purpose of Being Sick

From childhood, many of us learn subtle patterns around illness. Being unwell might have been the only time we were allowed to rest, to stay home where it felt safe, or to receive affection and attention. For others, illness became the only socially acceptable reason to stop and take a break. Even today, these unconscious lessons influence how and when our body calls in a “pause.”

On a biochemical level, emotions themselves are transported through the lymph system — our internal rivers of cleansing. Emotional stagnation can weigh on the body just as much as physical toxins. That’s why it’s so valuable to reflect on what emotions have been surfacing before illness appears. Often, our body is clearing old grief, frustration, or fear along with physical pathogens.

Supporting the Body Through Illness and Recovery

When symptoms strike, the focus is often on short-term relief — but true support means helping the body complete its detox fully. Some of my favourite supports in clinic and at home include:

  • Echinacea – Immune-strengthening, helping the body’s natural defences work efficiently.
Kinesiology: Clears Heat and Fire Toxins, supports the Lung and Stomach meridians, helping the body release pathogenic factors that cause fever, sore throat, or congestion.

  • Lysine – Supports tissue repair and is particularly useful against viral flare-ups.
Kinesiology: Works indirectly by supporting Kidney Jing (essence), which underpins immunity and resilience at a constitutional level.

  • Marshmallow Root – Soothes irritated mucous membranes in the respiratory and digestive tracts.
Kinesiology: Moistens the Lung meridian and nourishes the Large Intestine, easing dryness, cough, and irritation while supporting yin fluids.

  • Dandelion Root – A classic liver ally, encouraging detoxification.
Kinesiology: Clears Heat and Dampness, particularly from the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. Supports healthy digestion and helps release built-up anger or frustration — emotions often stored in the Liver.

  • Black Seed Oil – An ancient remedy for immune resilience and inflammation.
Kinesiology: Warms and moves Chi in the Kidney and Spleen meridians, strengthening foundational energy and reducing Dampness that can trap pathogens.

  • Liposomal Vitamin C – Supports cellular repair and full recovery after illness.
Kinesiology: Corresponds with the Lung meridian, which governs Wei Chi (defensive energy) and resilience against future invasions.

  • Native Plant-Based Vitamin C Berries – Such as Kakadu plum or Davidson plum - these whole-food sources gently and consistently restore vitality.
Kinesiology: Nourish the Spleen and Lung meridians, replenish Yin, and provide a steady foundation for rebuilding energy after illness.

  • Olive Leaf Extract – A powerful natural antimicrobial, traditionally used to fight off colds, flu, and viral infections while supporting cardiovascular health.
Kinesiology: Cools Heat, clears Dampness, and supports the Lung and Spleen meridians, helping the body release pathogens and restore balance.

Consistency Is Key

One of the most important (and often overlooked) aspects of recovery is consistency. Many people stop their herbs or supports as soon as they “feel better.” But the body is still completing its detox, still rebuilding energy reserves, and still recalibrating the immune system. Staying consistent with your herbal and nutritional supports even after symptoms disappear is what helps prevent recurring illness, the kind that creeps back every few weeks because the healing was never fully completed.

A Gentle Reminder

Being sick is not a punishment — it is a purposeful process. It is your body asking for space, rest, and deeper release. When we respond with patience, nourishment, and consistency, illness becomes not just a disruption but a doorway to a stronger, clearer, more balanced version of ourselves.
